Good morning and welcome back to Daily Drop. If youāre not reading our newsletter every morning, we have a really good New Yearās resolution for youā¦ š
Hereās what weāve got on the docket today:
š³ The best card for starters (and experts)
Itās the new year. That means itās time to start planning your travels for the year and racking up the points you need to do it.
In case you werenāt aware, we have a page on our website listing our favorite credit cards, which we update every month.
There hasnāt been a whole lot of movement in the credit card world lately, so instead I thought Iād address a common question about credit cards:
One of the first questions people have when they start dabbling with points and miles isā¦
āWhatās the best card for beginners?ā
OR
āWhatās the single BEST travel card?ā
Iāve been trained by the blogosphere to respond with things like, āWell, it all depends on your travel habits and spending patterns, and different cards work well for different people.ā
But thatās (sort of) bullsh*t.
The fact is, I can answer BOTH of those questions with the same card. The [[ chase-sapphire-preferred-card.name ]], to be specific.
Hereās why:
1. It earns the most valuable points currency
The [[ chase-sapphire-preferred-card.casual-card-name ]] earns what we call UR Points (you can read more about them here), one of the most valuable and flexible points currencies out there.
Not only can you use points to book travel in the bankās dedicated travel portal, but you can also transfer them to a ton of different airline and hotel programs, sometimes even with a bonus.
The current list of transfer partners is below:
Even if you donāt like flying with those airlines, these points are still valuable.
For example, you can transfer points to Aeroplan and use those points to book flights on Emirates, Lufthansa, Ethiopian, ANA, and dozens of other airlines.
Or you could transfer points to World of Hyatt to book amazing hotels for as little as 3,500 points per night - even luxurious ones, like this place in Bali that Iāll be staying at next month:
Even if you want to book obscure airlines or independent hotels, you can redeem your points at a rate of 1.25 cents per point right in the bankās travel portal.
For example, Iām currently in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Even in this random corner of the globe, you can book hotels in the portal for just over 5,000 points per night, which is a steal.
This is a great example of how even in parts of the world where there are no chain hotels or major airlines, you can STILL use your points to book travel.
But thatās just the beginningā¦
2. You can earn LOTS of points VERY quickly
Despite having a low annual fee, the [[ chase-sapphire-preferred-card.casual-card-name ]] has really solid earning rates for most everyday purchases like dining, online groceries, streaming, and travel.
In fact, if you book travel through the bankās portal and pay for it with your card, youāll earn 5X pointsā¦ š¤Æ
For example, if you book this hotel in downtown San Diego, youād earn almost 1,000 UR Points per night ($190 Ć 5X points per dollar).
And in addition to the normal everyday spending, youāll also earn a FAT welcome offer when you first sign up for the card.
The bonus amount fluctuates, but click this link to see the current one.
3. Low annual fee and decent perks
Considering the valuable points, great welcome offer, and excellent earning rates, youād think this card should have a hefty annual fee.
Well, youāre wrong. It doesnāt.
In fact, the annual fee is less than $100, which is why we recommend the [[ chase-sapphire-preferred-card.casual-card-name ]] to points veterans and newbies alike.
But it gets even betterā¦
You see, the [[ chase-sapphire-preferred-card.casual-card-name ]] also comes with an annual hotel credit that effectively cuts that annual fee in half.
You could book a night at this hotel in Tokyo and pretty much get it for free because of the creditā¦
After taxes, youād only have to pay $5 after the annual credit
So hereās the bottom line:
The [[ chase-sapphire-preferred-card.casual-card-name ]] has a great welcome offer, a low annual fee, valuable points, a long list of ways to use those points, and even an annual hotel credit.
Every single member of the Daily Drop team holds this card and doesnāt plan on letting it go.
So whether youāre new to the game or youāve been around for a while, everyone should have this card in their wallet. š

But letās get back to the city of fast-talking and fast-walking Italians.
Itās trueāthe Italians are fashionable people, and Milano is their Mecca. In fact, as someone who dresses fairly well (in my opinion, lolz), Iāve still never felt less fashionable in my life than when strolling the streets of Milan š
But the city is far more than just thatāit holds perhaps one of Italyās (and Europeās) most iconic landmarksā¦ the imposing, Gotchic-style Duomo di Milano.
And trust me, youāll want to reserve your spot to climb the darn thing. Seriously, do it.
Its facade from the ground is one thing, but scrambling around its jagged roof? Otherworldly š®
But perhaps you fancy art and culture? Milan is like, āBro, I got that too.ā
Itās stuffed full of museums and art galleries, but perhaps my favorite is seeing Leonardo da Vinciās famous mural, The Last Supper, in the Santa Maria delle Grazie church.
Google it. You know the one.
I could go on and on, but this is a five-minute newsletter, remember? š
So Iād say if you want the chance to score a cheap flight to an incredible city like Milan (or to thousands of other destinations around the globe), then consider checking out FareDrop and all it has to offer!
